- Breast Implants don’t last forever. Although typical breast augmentation may last up to ten years, some patients report no issue beyond thirty years. However, patients should prepare themselves for the fact that future surgeries are the norm rather than the exception.
- Breast augmentation alone may not be always able to correct sagging breast. Although breast augmentation may be able to correct a minimal degree of sagging tissue (ptosis), and additional breast lift (mastopexy) may be required at the same time as augmentation or during a separate surgery to create a uniform and well shaped breast
- Patients still can get yearly mammograms with implants. Although implants may obscure some areas of traditional mammogram views, additional views may be required to image the entire native breast tissue.
- You can breastfeed. The majority of patients do not have difficulty breastfeeding once they’ve had an augmentation regardless of the incision made for implant placement. Since there are no 100% guarantees, patients extremely concerned about the ability to breast-feed should have a discussion with their surgeon regarding the technique that would provide them the greatest chance to breast feed after surgery.
- Greater that 300,000 people had breast augmentation in 2010 in the U.S.. Breast augmentation has consistently ranked as one of the most popular and common cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S..
- There are multiple techniques for successful breast augmentation. Incisions and implant placement are surgeon and patient dependent.
- Breast augmentation requires scars. Although the goal of any cosmetic surgery is to minimize scars, breast augmentation does result in scaring that is patient and implant type dependent.
- Implant vary in material, shape and size. As most patients are aware of, there are silicone and saline filled implants. Shapes range from round to teardrop shaped and from low profile to high profile. Your surgeon will work with you to select the appropriate combination of the variables for a desired outcome.
- Under federal regulations, patients have to be 18 years of age to undergo saline breast augmentation and 22 years of age to undergo silicone breast augmentation.
- Silicone breast implants are safe. In 1999, the Institute of Medicine published a study that reported no evidence that silicone or saline breast implant causes systemic health problems.
